The Bethel Wildcats and Lady Wildcats traveled to Tecumseh Tuesday and registered a win for the boys and a tough setback for the girls.

The Cats came out strong leading by eight after the first quarter. They kept the pressure on the Savages the entire game shooting nearly 60% from the field and cruised to a convincing 58-49 victory. Sophomore Drae Wood led the effort with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Freshman Gage Porter and junior Jaylon Gordon added 11, while juniors Devin Acklin and Parker Hall scored 7 each.

“I think us getting stops in the first half and holding them to one shot on possessions helped us. When we pushed the ball we scored well in transition,” Acklin said. “When it came time for them to foul us, we had guys make free throws and ice the game.”

Three other Wildcats made their way into the scoring column: junior Ryan Depuy and senior Anthony Franklin with 3 points, and freshman John Gordon with 2.

“We had a hard fought game and we just outworked them. Especially on the rebounds where we had 36 and they had 16,” Depuy said. “We got a lot of shots at the rim and that really propelled us to the finish line.”

In the Lady Wildcats game, junior Kennedy Gregory poured in 17 points including shooting 88% from the free throw line.  Senior Kirsten Winters had 11, while senior Brooke Shaw contributed 7 points. In the end, the Lady Cats came up short and lost a close one 51-45.  Four other Lady Wildcats made their way into the scoring column: juniors Kelsie Wood and Paige Hubler with 4 points, and freshman Kassidy Depuy and junior Laney O’Rorke with 2.

“Our shots weren’t falling the whole game and we didn’t play solid defense,” Gregory said. “Those were our main problems.”

Bethel’s next game is this upcoming Tuesday, January 29 at home against Community Christian. This is Bethel’s senior night so come out and show your support! Junior varsity starts at 4:00, varsity girls start at 6:00, and varsity boys start at 8:00.

Next Friday, February 1, come see the Bethel Wildcats play Little Axe for the homecoming game. Junior varsity starts at 4:00, coronation at 5:30, and varsity girls start at 6:30 and varsity boys at 8:00.
